Derek Davis was born in Hednesford in 1940
He grew up in the mining village of Hazel Slade
He married to Muriel who became a Cannock Chase District Councillor. They have a son Mark who became a City of Stoke on Trent Councillor, and he is grandfather
He became a Mining Engineer
In 1971 he became a Hednesford trader and a Cannock Chase District Councillor
In 1985 he became a County Councillor for the Chadsmoor Division of Cannock Chase
Between 1989 and 1997 he was Chairman of Staffordshire Fire and Public Protection Committee
Between 1997 and 2001 he was Deputy Leader of Staffordshire County Council
Between 2001 and 2009 he was Chairman of Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire Combined Fire and Rescue Service
He has also been President of the local Chamber of Commerce and Trade, a school governor and Cannock Chase Labour Party, General Election Agent, Constituency Chair and Secretary
In 2010 Derek Davis was named in the Queen’s Honours List and received the OBE for his services to local government, particularly for his work as Chairman of Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire Combined Fire and Rescue Service from 2001-2009
Presently (2010) he is an active member of Cannock Chase Labour Party, leader of Staffordshire County Council Labour Group, a member of Staffordshire Police Authority and Chairman of Finance at Hednesford Town Council, and Branch Secretary and Co-op Party Chairman
He is an ardent Wolves supporter, a member of Brocton Hall Golf Club and currently enjoys writing the history of Hazel Slade
